Malm Fireplaces

Tawny and I were discussing what she should get her husband for Christmas and without missing a beat I exclaimed  - "A fireplace!"  They have a really lovely home in an adorable neighborhood, but no fireplace...can you imagine?  Really, the horror.

I live in Texas, and around October I start cranking the AC up so I can begin my day fireside.  Not the most environmental option, I realize.

Tawny - these are the fireplaces that I was telling you about!  They are from a company called Malm, and Sean and I are both obsessed with them.  Talk about a surefire way to take a room from ho-hum to off the charts.  In saying this, I understand that these are a pretty strong and specific look but I can imagine them in a large range of interior styles.  And oustide?  Forgetaboutit!  Just fantastic.

Do what do you think?  Love 'em or hate 'em?

moomah

Have you ever come across a concept and felt tinges of pain in you heart that you didn't come up with it?   What I'm feeling is a bit more than a tinge and it's over moomah, in Tribeca.  If I'm not genius enough to create this space, I'd settle for living near it.

The brain child of Tracey Stewart (Jon Stewart's wife!), this multi-purpose destination is a kid friendly space like no other.  I just wrote to inquire about franchise opportunities and no, I'm not kidding.  Doesn't ever city deserve such a wonderland?

This is "Supertryer", moomah's mascot.  He has an assortment of ways to encourage young and old to try new things.  Here you find him enjoying afternoon tea.

And don't even get me started on their logos, branding and materials.  Really phenomenal.

National Forest Signage

I've spent a fair amount of time in various National Forests over the past month and each time the views and surrounding have been nothing short of glorious.  But there has been one shocking delight in my viewfinder that I wasn't anticipating.  I am falling in love with National Forestry's signage.  I am expecting to lose quite a few of you with this one.  Nonetheless, as my ardent devotion continues to grow, I feel now is the time to speak up.

I tried finding the script font and found instead that it was a custom job, hand lettered.  A much as I love a good font, this certainly added to the appeal for me.  And the cookies and cream color combo?  Delicious.

Clearly the signs - with their off kilter shape and jaunty script look kitschy and nostalgic.  But they work, they just really work.  Last decade, next decade - there is a sweet timelessness about them.  I can only hope that these will never be updated, that the look will endure.  In this cases I'm gonna have to stick with the old adage, if it ain't broke...

What are your thoughts, either way?  Are these signs faded or fantastic?

Heritage Restorations

Ya know when you come across a new product or company and you fall fast and you fall hard?  That's how it has been for me and Heritage Restorations.  My sister sent me that link to this company and within five minutes we were on the phone ooohing and ahhing.

This is the description from the site:

"At Heritage Restorations, we locate, dismantle, restore, and re-erect 18th and 19th century timber frame barns, hand-hewn log cabins, gristmills, and other historic buildings. These time-tested, hand-crafted structures are then finished with modern, innovative, energy-efficient designs and materials. The completed structures make beautiful and unique homes, guest houses, commercial spaces and even.....barns!"

Totally fantastic.

Alys Beach

Remember when I was going on and on about Celebration, Florida? Well, I just stumbled upon Alys Beach, a little jewel hidden on Florida's gulf coast - and it could sure give Celebration a run for it's money.

Check this place out:

"An oasis of luxury with a distinct Mediterranean feel, Alys Beach is the crown jewel of Florida’s Emerald Coast. It is a beach community founded in New Urbanism and built to exacting standards for the utmost in luxury living. It is a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Alys Beach is a reminder that what once was can indeed still be. It is a life of balance, a life of beauty, a life of simplicity, a life of grace. Alys Beach is a life defined.

Located along Florida’s Gulf Coast, Alys Beach boasts one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. With a carpet of sugar-fine sand descending into crystal-clear waters, this stretch of Gulf Coast is unmatched in beauty. Zoning laws preserve the pristine beach and keep it clear of the billboards and storefronts that litter ordinary beach towns. The Emerald Coast is so clean and well preserved that it has been certified as a Blue Wave Beach by the country’s only environmental-certification program for beaches.

Set against this immaculate natural backdrop, Alys Beach is a distinctive beach town designed and founded upon the principles of New Urbanism, a movement that emphasizes community and whose hallmark is the placement of amenities in and around homes to promote walking, talking, and a sense of connectedness. Every one of Alys Beach’s amenities, from the idyllic Caliza pool to the neighborhood coffee shop, is located within walking distance of every front door."

These are some photos from their various real estate or vacation rental properties along with some of the public spaces:

Curb - the natural media company

The first time that I came across something like this was in Canada.  I remember looking at a hillside that ran alongside the roadway and seeing a Coca-Cola ad created entirely from shrubs.  That was several years ago but I was reminded of it a couple of months ago while at Disney World.  At Epcot there were ads on the grounds made entirely from flowers.  I was struck by how fantastic this idea is.  Let's face it - advertising isn't going anywhere soon.  But at the very least can't we require something more of advertisers.  Rather than allowing them carte blanche to ruin every landscape & surface imaginable - why does we insist that they better the view?  When you consider the staggering amount spent on advertisements each year, does it make sense that the money not only inform but also contribute?

I spent a little time researching this idea and came across a company called Curb.  Curb is the world's first natural media company.  They offer a large number of media solutions with only the use of natural elements. Take a look at some of their concepts:

Low grow - ingenious ways of re-creating brands and adverts using high quality shrubs, plants, turf and natural elements such as wood and natural stone to create brand logos in almost any color you can imagine. These are built to last indefinitely and can be displayed in an indoor environment for up to 8 weeks.

Crop ads:

Mow Ad:

Rake ad:

Compost art - Our experts can literally carve or recreate any message, brand, logo or even building using natural Compost.  And before you ask, all of the natural compost they use is manure free, so there is never a need to stand up-wind of the brilliant natural displays!

Solar art - This incredible natural media is created using nothing but the power of the sun's rays, a magnifying glass and the skill of their artist who is able to burn the most intricate patterns, portraits and logos into wood.

Wood carving - Our wood carving expert can literally re-create any message, artwork or logo from wood. At Curb we don't usually like to blow our own whistle but our wood carving expert is the royal wood carver, so rest assured the quality and detail we can deliver is quite literally sensational. Our expert has decades of wood carving experience and has done pieces for everyone from HRH Prince William to the Emperor of Japan. Whatever you want done in wood, from small displays to huge wood poster billboards Curb can carve them to perfection!

Sand carving:

Sea tagging:

Clean advertising - Clean advertising is a beautifully simple and highly targeted natural media which works by literally cleaning your advert in any high footfall urban location. Also known as reverse graffiti, clean graffiti and street advertising, we use specialist equipment and laser cut stencils to selectively clean the dirt away from pavements and walls. The resultant clean advert is created by the stark contrast between the original colour of the dirty surface and the as new clean color.  Clean advertising lasts for anywhere from 2 to 20 weeks dependant on the location and we use nothing but filtered rainwater to clean the advertisement into dirty surfaces.

Grammy Art

I am loving the fresh approach in advertising that was used for this years Grammys.  The campaign was done by TBWA/ Chiat/ Day and I think they came up with some pretty fantastic results.  A Grammy spokeswoman says each artist depicted was asked to give the Recording Academy 10-20 songs that influenced or affected their life and career. The lyrics and song titles are then featured in the print and television ads.

we heart mini's & airstreams

I had to post on this as Minis & Airstreams are Sean's two very favorite modes of transport.  And yeah, I really like them too.  Now these two iconic brands have teamed up with Republic of Fritz Hansen to design a concept prepared for any of your water adventure needs.

I'm concerned that this could be enough to push Sean over the edge.

You can read more about it here.  Spotted here.

the Hotel San Jose

So, we didn't get our destination wedding.  But we did ended up having a great wedding weekend with everyone we love.  Though we didn't set out for it to be like this - Sean's family and all of their friends were camped out at one hotel. My family and our family friends were camped out at another.  And Sean and I, with all of our friends - took up residence at the Hotel San Jose.  Ummm...that just worked out really well.  Everyone was getting to spend lots of time with the people that they really want to.  And had we known how great the San Jose would turn out to be, we might have planned our wedding in Austin around that instead.  It is just the perfect laid-back cool place to unwind before the big day. It's also so small that everyone was just walking around from room to room like we owned the place - not a bad fantasy to get to entertain the weekend of your wedding.
